The IInd Uttarakhand Spring Bird Festival is being organized on the 3rd Anniversary of the Uttarakhand Birdwatching Programme and will help attract visitors for birdwatching in Kumaon region and in Uttarakhand. The Festival is a great opportunity for nature lovers, birdwatchers, photographers, students, rural tourism professionals and members of conservation and tourism organizations to learn about bird conservation and rural tourism and enjoy outdoors.
Uttarakhand Birdwatching Programme was launched in February 2012 by Ecotourism Wing of the Forest Dept. Twenty-five Birdwatching camps have been conducted during the last three years at 25 birding destinations in Uttarakhand. Nearly 578 forest staff, nature guides, operators, students and villagers have benefitted from these camps. The First Uttarakhand Spring Bird Festival organized at Asan Conservation Reserve from 5th to 9th Feb. 2014 was a huge success and received over 1200 participants. Several publications have been brought out to increase bird awareness.
Purpose:The purpose of the USBF is to promote Uttarakhand as a Birdwatching destination by scaling up bird guiding and birdwatching activity. The specific objectives of the Second Uttarakhand Spring Bird Festival 2015 are:
To increase awareness about birds and mobilize public support for bird conservation & solid waste management. To improve bird watching skills of bird guides, rural tourism operators and researchers. To promote community based tourism enterprises and provide an opportunity for networking to bird guides. To promote Pawalgarh Conservation Reserve as a bird watching destination.
Venue:The IInd USBF will be organized at Pawalgarh Conservation Reserve situated close to Kaladhungi / Ramnagar in Nainital District of Uttarakhand. Guided Birdwatching will be conducted at Kyari, Sitabani, Pawalgarh & Kaladhungi; the Festival activities will be conducted at the Centre for Ecotourism at Chunakhan near Bailparao. The Festival will showcase Jim Corbett Legacy as well.
Partners: The event will be organized by the Uttarakhand Forest Department in partnership with NGOs (Titli Trust, Rainbow Friends of Nature and Environment, BNHS, Waste Warriors, Corbett Gram Vikas Samiti, Asian Adventures, Welham Boys School), Govind Ballabh Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment & Development, Wildlife Institute of India, KMVN & IHM. The Festival is being supported by Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change Govt. of India, NABARD, Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board, Uttarakhand Forest Development Corporation and Ajeevika.
Programme & Activities: The IInd USBF 2015 will be inaugurated on Wednesday 4th February and culminate on Sunday 8th February 2015. The Festival will include guided bird watching, exhibition (scientific displays including demonstration of equipment and activities, rural tourism mart, vendors, food stalls, local handicrafts), bird photography and other workshops, lectures, film shows, popular activities based on birds (book reading, quiz, etc.) and cultural performances.
Publications: The Bird Checklist of Uttarakhand, Booklet on 20 Birding Hotspots of Uttarakhand and CD on Bird Sounds are being reproduced. Bulletin on Bird Festivals, Brochure for Pawalgarh CR including a map and posters and handouts on woodpeckers and Hindi version of Uttarakhand Nature Handbook will be released.
Participants: The Festival is a large scale event that will bring together, bird guides, forest staff, visitors, local community ventures, students and general public. There will be about 3000 participants. The participants will come largely from Ramnagar, Nainital and Haldwani and other parts of Uttarakhand but also Delhi, Punjab and HP as well as some foreigners.
Registration: There will be prior registration for guided Birdwatching, Heritage Walks and photography workshops. Attendance at ceremonies will be through invitation only. The last date for registration will be 31st Jan 2015.
